Cleaning Drapes and Curtains Do’s and Don’ts

Curtains and drapes are probably not on the top of your list for household items that require cleaning.  For many of us, the thought of such a laborious chore has us running to our local professional dry cleaner to manage the process for us.  The good news is your local dry cleaner will be able to dry clean, wet clean and or hand wash your curtains as specified by the manufacturers care label.  So, if your time is important to you.  Visit your local dry cleaner.

That being said, there are a few simple steps to follow when you are wanting to hand wash household drapes or curtains.

  • Do read the care label.  If the care label recommends dry cleaning your drapes or curtains, trust the label.  Don’t make the mistake of washing dry clean only drapes or curtains, which may result in fabric shrinkage, fading or worse.
  • Do ensure you remove any hooks or rings to prevent damage.
  • If your drapes or curtains are laden with dust, do take them outside and attempt to shake or gently brush off any visible dirt and dust.
  • Fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and a mild detergent.  Immerse the drapes or curtains in the bathtub and ensure the water covers the curtains completely. Allow the drapes or curtains to soak for 15 to 20 minutes.  If you do not have a bathtub, you can use a large bucket or basin.
  • Gently swirl or circulate the drapes or curtains back and forth to help break down any accumulated soil.  This motion should be similar to items agitating in a washing machine.
  • Rinse your drapes or curtains.  The easiest method for rinsing is to drain existing water and refill your bathtub or basin with clean warm water.
  • Gently agitate again to remove any excess detergent.
  • Allow the water to drain and gently squeeze out excess water without wringing the drapes or curtains.  Wringing may cause damage to the fabric.
  • Hang to dry.  A clothesline is ideal.
  • Do steam your drapes or curtains and or iron in accordance with care label for the desired look.

Although handwashing your drapes or curtain is time consuming, using the right cleaning method allows you ensure your drapes and curtains are with you for years to come.
