Linen curtains are so versatile. From bringing a romantic element to your bedroom, to providing a crisp, clean, airy and fresh look to your kitchen. Linen curtains are a wonderful addition to one’s home.
Cleaning linen curtains can be a bit challenging. Linen is very durable. It is a textile made from flax. However it can shrink if not cared for properly and obtaining the desired look can be a bit of a challenge. That being said, linen curtains can often be cleaned at home without worry.
You have a couple of options when cleaning your linen curtains. First and foremost, check your care label. If the label indicates your curtains should be dry cleaned, trust the label and bring your curtains to your local dry cleaner.
If cleaning your curtains at home, follow manufactures guidelines. If you haven’t cared for your curtains in some time, take them outside and shake them out to remove any dust that may have accumulated on the curtains. Fill your washing machine with cool water and a mild laundry detergent. You can use the sink or bath tub as well. Immerse the curtains in the water and allow your curtains to soak for 45-60 minutes. Finalize the wash cycle if using your washing machine using a gentle spin cycle; or, you can rinse with cool water and squeeze out as much water as possible without wringing the material. If you are not using your washing machine, a large towel can be helpful in removing excess water. Allow your curtains to dry on a drying rack or clothesline. Your bathroom shower curtain rod may be useful.
If you desire the natural crinkly look of linen, you can rehang your curtains once dry. If the level of crinkle is a bit more than desired, you can use a steamer to remove some of the wrinkles from the fabric. If you desire the crisp pressed look in your linen curtains, you can iron for the desired effect. Be certain to double check the care label. You do not want to iron at a temperature that is not desired for the fabric.
