There is nothing sexy about sorting laundry. For many of us, the thought of sorting laundry is one extra step we don’t care to take in the boring task of doing laundry. That being said, we are here to share some tips for sorting your laundry. If you still have no desire to deal with it, bring your laundry to Collegiate Cleaners. We make “dirty” a thing of the past.
The first rule of thumb when doing laundry is to review the care label. Some items require dry cleaning, hand washing or a wet wash within a specific temperature range.
The sorting process is pretty basic. Think white, light, bright and dark. If any of your garments are heavily soiled, you will want to wash these items separately and consider pre-treating spots and stains as appropriate.
White means white. When we don’t separate out white, the result is often a dingy white. Whites are meant to POP! So, separate out those whites from other fabrics that contain dyes that can easily transfer to your whites. If you have a garment with print, a pattern or colored embroidery other than white on it, it is not white. It is light.
Your light load should consist of whites with colored print, patterns, and embroidery. It includes off-white, cream, light gray colored fabrics and any other color that is almost white.
Think bright primary colored garments like red and green when sorting a pile for brights. We tend to see magenta and yellow in this category as well.
Black, brown, dark gray, purple and blue make up the dark category. It is important to keep your darks separate from other colors to prevent transferring dye to other items and dulling your whites, lights or brights.
Taking the time to separate and sort your laundry will help preserve the color in your dyed fabrics and keep your whites looking bright. If laundry is just not for you, come see us! We are happy to do the sorting for you!!
