Faux fur has been around for years. Apparently, since 1929 when the hair of South American alpaca was used for fake furs. Much has changed over the years. From pillows, throw blankets, and rugs to coats, hats, sweaters and robes, faux fur has become a popular fashion item and remains strong in the fashion industry. Many homes and wardrobes across the globe are laden with luxurious fake fur. We love the look. We love the feel. However, many of us have no clue how to properly care for faux fur.
The most important step when cleaning faux fur is to check the care label for instructions. If the care label calls for dry cleaning, trust the label. Bring your faux fur to a professional dry cleaner to ensure the safety of the fabric. Dry cleaners also specialize in the treatment of stains and spots and will ensure your faux fur is returned looking and feeling fabulous.
Speaking of stains, what is the best way to treat a spot or stain when dry cleaning is not required? This can be a tough question as it is dependent on the type of stain you are facing; however, the general rule is a mild detergent and a soft white cloth to help prevent color transfer on your fabric. Use a slow methodical dabbing action working the detergent in towards the center of the stain. Once you have removed the stain, rinse with cool water and allow to dry or follow the care methods below.
Many faux fur items can be cleaned in the washing machine. If a garment, we recommend turning inside out. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Allow items to air dry on a drying rack or clothesline and then fluff with your hands to bring back the natural shape and feel of the fabric. You can also use a brush with wide spaced bristles to gently brush your faux fur.
For items that require handwashing, use cool water and add a mild detergent. For larger items consider using your bathtub versus a wash basin. Immerse the item in the water and allow to soak for 20-30 minutes. Then, gently agitate and rinse with cool water. Avoid wringing the item as you remove excess water. Wringing may alter the shape of the fabric. You can use a large beach towel to help assist in extracting some of the water by gently folding your faux fur in the towel. Allow the item to air dry on a drying rack or clothesline. Don’t forget to fluff and shake your faux fur after drying to return the natural feel and shape of the fabric.
